Date: Apr 11, 1999 Grampus griseus, Lactation period, Male, 163cm, 39kg, 6 days alive
Location: Shan Hai Port, Hengchun
Situation: At 3 PM on April 11, 1999, it stranded in Shan Hai Port, Hengchun and was transported to our museum at 3:30 PM to have treatments in a rehabilitation pool. The dolphin received constant around the clock care from the aquarium staff and several short-term caretakers. The baby dolphin had several blisters and shark wounds (which were bitten by cookie-cutter sharks) on its back. Badly dehydrated, debilitated, and not eating, its breath stank. We made every effort to provide for its recovery, but it proved to be futile after six days. It died at 6AM on April 17, 1999.
Cause of Death: We speculated the causes of its death to be lung infection, liver cirrhosis, and brain infection.
